my only collection

I began collecting bottle caps in 2008, when I lived in Chile.

Andrea and I gathered a glorious assortment of Chilean and Peruvian caps that came off of beers, sodas, waters, etc. Like scavengers, our eyes constantly surveyed the ground in front of us for anything pretty or different. When we went out at night para carretear, we asked bartenders to save the tops off all bottles they opened during the evening. Many were happy to oblige and gave us their lot at the end of the night. We even solicited our friends in other parts of the world to save their interesting finds. Then we took our collection and covered a side table.
Old habits die hard, so I’m still collecting caps when I see them. I went through my collection the other night and pulled out my favorites.
When I buy beer, I go to Whole Foods, because they have the best selection, and I can build my own six pack. Or I can just grab one or two if that’s all I want. When I’m having trouble deciding between one beer or the other, I usually pick the one that has the snazzier bottle cap.
