holiday giveaway!

December 12th, 2011 § 27 Comments

‘Tis the season, is it not?

Because I am so very grateful to you, my readers, and because it is oh so fun to give this time of year, I’m giving away a $15 gift card to Whole Foods to one reader! You can have a little fun and pick up a nice bottle of wine, some fancy cheese, or a six pack of craft beer. (Obviously those items would be the first on my shopping list.) Or you can use it toward your holiday meal planning/budget.

You can enter four ways. Each option counts as an entry, so you can have up to four entries altogether.

1. Comment on this post and tell me what special dish or meal is part of your holiday tradition. (Note: Liking this post does not count as an entry.)

2. Subscribe to cactus & kudzu. You can do so by clicking the follow button on the top left (if you’re a WordPress user), or you can click the signup button on the right toolbar under Email Subscription.

3.  Tweet the following post to your Twitter followers: I hope I win the holiday giveaway at cactus & kudzu! @brettbralley: http://tinyurl.com/7zp9sdc

(Note: Be sure to include my Twitter handle (@brettbralley) in the Tweet!)

4. Post a link to this entry on your Facebook page. (Leave me an additional comment letting me know you posted it.)

Contest ends Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 12 p.m. central time. Winner will be announced Wednesday, Dec. 21, and the card should be in the mail shortly after!

Happy Holidays!

  • swedish meatballs! and a norwegian bread called Julekake.

  • Amber Gaddy says:

Christmas cookies! My mom and I made dozens of trees, stockings and stars every year. It’s one of my favorite (and tastiest) memories.

  • John Elder says:

Sweet Potato Casserole, with loads of butter, sugar, and marshmallows. Had to introduce my northern friends to the magic.

  • Mincemeat (fruit) pies. Mum and I haven’t made them in years, but I’m going home for the first time in 4 years and we have plans to make them (along with 10 million other things.) It never quite feels like Christmas without them

  • Ben F. says:

At Christmastime I always look forward to my aunt’s peanut butter cornflake bites– delicious and addictive.

Some other people may have seen that one around the holidays, but I think my grandmother is the only person to ever make a moonshine fruitcake.

  • Sarah Alvaro says:

We always have at least a casserole or two full of cheese grits. They’re fantastic!

  • Pam says:

This year, we’re going with my family’s famous potato salad to go with ham sandwiches.

  • Kathy E says:

I can not beleive that someone said Sweet Potato Cassarole!! I love it and it just doesn’t seem right t have it at any other time but the holidays. Mine has to have marshmellow and pecans on it!

  • MaryJones says:

Even though you WOULD NOT give out the secret ingredients….
macaroni and cheese… gibbs style… would be my absolute fave for recipes. It is a year-round tradition at my house!

  • becky evans says:

I love Smoked Cabbage and its always a special side that is made for the Holidays, it was started by my Grandfather and this keeps his tradition alive.

  • andreamabry says:

Hot buttered rum. My “third set of grandparents” (next door neighbors) would always have big family Christmas Eve parties and everyone would drink it. The kids, of course, had just the mix with hot water and no rum!

  • My mom’s egg rolls, haha! She makes them for every holiday.

  • Ozzie says:

There is a method to my madness…
Jesus was born into poverty. Therefore we have a simple soup and bread to begin our celebrations.
The 2nd coming of Christ he will return as a King, therefore we have a feast.
Christmas eve we have albondigas (your mama’s recipe with a few minor changes).
Christmas day begins with huge homemade cinnamon rolls lathered in cream cheese frosting.
Bagels lox and cream cheese with all the fixings for brunch.
And prime rib twice baked potatoes and baby carrots cooked in butter brown sugar and brandy.
Homemade eggnog and creme brulle for dessert.

  • Bev Mabry says:

I want to go to Mrs. Chavez’s house for Christmas, it sounds wonderful!
We always have a very snack oriented Christmas Eve and watch movies late into the night dips, finger foods, egg nog, hot buttered rum mostly cuddle on the couch time!
Christmas day lasagna or a ham dinner, this year lasagna!

Well, as newlyweds, my husband and I look forward to starting our own foodie Christmas traditions together! We are both Whole Foods junkies, though, and especially love their prepared desserts (the tiny containers of tapioca pudding are to die for, so I’m sure they would figure in to our plans!). At home, though, my family celebrates Christmas Eve with an odd array of culinary fixtures: fajitas (for my sister); roasted lamb (thanks to my sister-in-law’s Portuguese traditions), and sometimes steak stew too. We also HAVE to drink Cokes in glass bottles during the Christmas Eve gift-unwrapping extravaganza. So I hope to bring some of these traditions into my new home with my hubby! (This is Carrie Allen, Brett, by the way! Love your blog!)

  • annebach says:

BB, I’m feeling like a complete stalker, but I just tweeted and Facebooked your post! ; ) Feeling very fun and festive even if another well-deserving human being wins the card. Like the giveaway idea and want to generate some traffic for a cool blog!

    • love you CA!! Thanks so much for promoting it! Your traditions sound oh so wonderful. LOVE the idea of drinking cokes in glass bottles while unwrapping presents. Hope you and Joe have a wonderful first Christmas together.

  • Cindy A. says:

Thank you so much for offering such a great giveaway! My mister’s grandmother always made a chocolate eclair cake for Christmas, but now that she is older the tradition has been passed to me. It is by far the easiest dessert to make, and its delicious! If you haven’t already I highly suggest you try it. :)
