mid-morning hunger: french fries

January 31, 2013 § 2 Comments

When I lived in Chile, I lived in french fry heaven.

Consider the chorillana: Home-fried papas fritas topped with steak, scrambled eggs, and fried onions. So wrong, so right.

We were up in Huntsville visiting James’ parents not too long ago, and they nearly made me tear up when they said they’d be frying their own french fries that night.

It’s just one of those things. I know I love french fries, but when I pop a fry into my mouth that is hot and crispy on the outside, and fresh, tender and rich on the inside, I can hardly articulate how my fry affection is taken to an almost forgotten level.

Simply beautiful.

basil mayonnaise

How heavenly a sandwich becomes when each slice of bread is laden with a generous shmear of this fresh, vibrant aioli.

I found this recipe on The Kitchn, where it was adapted from Orangette. I followed The Kitchn recipe, so I won’t be sharing it in this post—just a little step by step.

But really, this is so easy—so worth the minimal effort to add an extra layer of flavor that will go well with any sandwich. Do you want to know another way Molly at Orangette uses it? She adds it to deviled eggs. Ah! Imagine crostini with a layer of this topped with egg salad. Yes, I do believe I shall.

We followed suit with The Kitchn and added this to a BALT. Or a BLAT. Or a BLT with Avocado.

There aren’t many finer things in this life than the simplicity of a BLT + A. And then add this mayo? Really, over the top.

Perfection.

Go forth and make this tonight. Here’s the recipe one more time: California BLT with Avocado and Basil Mayonnaise.

mid-morning hunger: saganaki by Saveur

I think I’ll make this over the weekend.

This Greek dish consists of shrimp, garlic, and tomatoes topped with feta and broiled. It would go well with perhaps a chopped salad and some crusty bread. Oh, and a nice bottle of wine. What a perfect Friday or Saturday night dinner, huh? And a perfect way to break in our  new cast iron skillet! If I make it, I’ll post pictures.

mid-morning hunger: potato tacos by matt armendariz

For lunch today, I want just one thing: for Matt Armendariz (photographer, stylist, and recipe developer of Matt Bites) to make me these potato tacos.

Potato tacos remind me of when I was in high school. On Fridays at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, we didn’t get a full lunch hour because we finished at 1, but the lunch truck (yes, we had a roach coach) still made its way up the steep hill as it did every day, and camped out on campus offering potato tacos as its end-of-the-week special. Every week I dug through my backpack for change, scraping together $1.50, and ordered my deep-fried snack. I topped it with hot sauce, sour cream, cheese, and then bit into the screaming hot crunchy tortilla stuffed with potato. Grease dripped down my chin, and I was in heaven. It was the best part of Fridays.

I don’t know about you, but my mouth is watering right now.

mid-morning hunger: Halloween

October 31, 2011 § 1 Comment

Unlike most mid-morning hunger posts, this one will be short and sweet. It’s Halloween, and at Celebrate magazine, that means we’re busy busy busy. So here’s a quick idea for a Halloween-inspired lunch or dinner tonight.

Morbid Miniature French Onion Soups — Martha Stewart
Martha always does Halloween well, and I love this recipe. Instead of the traditional Gruyere that tops French onion soup, this has Morbier cheese, which has a stripe of vegetable ash down the center, making it very Halloween-y.

Have a fun, spooky day!

mid-morning hunger: savory pumpkin recipes

October 24, 2011 § 2 Comments

A fall chill set in late last week. It feels wonderful to bundle up in a sweater, scarf, and boots. And now I’m truly ready to indulge in all things autumn. This morning I’m craving anything pumpkin. But no pumpkin pie for me right now, thank you. Right now I’m all about using that sweet fall squash in a savory dish. So here’s some inspiration:

(Here’s a tip: Don’t have the energy for homemade pasta? Try using wonton wrappers!)

mid-morning hunger: fried rice

As I am running behind in just about every way today, I don’t have a full mid-morning hunger post for you. Instead, here’s what’s in my lunch today:

Chicken Fried Rice with Vegetables — My Recipes

Yeah, that’s cool. You can be a little jealous.

I’ve got a good post in the works for next week, though. At least I hope so. Happy Monday!

Where Am I?
